Alice Newman

Student Treasurer 2025

BSc Economics and Mathematics

Alice Newman is currently a second-year Bachelor of Science student double majoring in Economics and Mathematics. She was a first-year resident at Rochester and Rutherford Hall in 2025, where she served as Treasurer on the Student Executive.

During her time in the Hall, Alice proved herself to be a proactive and capable leader, demonstrating excellent financial acumen and strong management of the student levy and associated budgets. She was widely recognised for her calm, considered approach to decision-making and her ability to deliver outcomes that benefited the wider year group.

From early in her studies, Alice has been passionate about economics and has relished the opportunity to deepen her understanding through her coursework, particularly in Intermediate Microeconomics (Firms and Markets) under Senior Lecturer Philip Gunby.

Looking ahead, Alice aspires to contribute to policymaking, forecasting, analytics, financial decision-making, and economic research that has tangible impacts on communities and society. Ultimately, she hopes to work with organisations such as the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, The Treasury, or potentially the World Bank Group.

Alice came to the University of Canterbury on a UC Haupatu Scholarship in recognition of her involvement in netball and volleyball. She continues to represent UC in volleyball and will soon travel to Palmerston North to compete in the Volleyball New Zealand Tertiary Championships.

In recognition of her talent, drive, and commitment to learning, Alice was recently awarded the prestigious John Rutherford Scholarship—an honour that reflects both her academic excellence and her promising future in the field of economics.
