Civic Engagement Brings Relief and Purpose

The Student Volunteer Army at UC continues to offer long-term engagement through local and wider community service. This work provides a focus to rebuild and enable better communities. The strategic planning, resourcing and practical labour is a platform to shape principles and rooted in humility and ethical engagement. The ongoing work through SVA provides resilience to those who benefit, and a greater sense of purpose for those involved in service. It is encouraging to see our alumni Jaime Uy De Baron, Haden Watson and Flynn Turfrey-Rowe leading and contributing to this service on a consistent basis. TVNZ recently captured their recent project in Kaikoura bringing relief to a situation torn apart by tragedy.

“If I put myself in his shoes I would just hate to be alone in that situation” (Flynn).

These sentiments describe an understanding that purposeful action creates dignity and hope for those receiving and those giving.
